AI And Its Role In Architecture

Robot_Draw

Artificial intelligence (AI) has taken over the world by storm in just the past year. ChatGPT has revolutionized how we create content, solve problems, and tackle everyday issues. There are other types of AI, such as machines and memory-based models, that have been helpful in various industries.

So how has AI changed the field of architecture? Will it take over the industry anytime soon?

Most likely, no, so that’s good news if you’re studying to be an architect. Technology won’t be taking over your job yet. AI is skilled at many things, but it cannot take the place of a live, human architect. AI is always expanding its knowledge on various topics, and architecture is no exception. Still, there are some things that technology cannot replicate, such as human emotions.

By going to architecture school, people learn to combine technical knowledge, arts, esthetics, and emotions with the skills they use. Architecture schools train students how to respond to certain design problems with solutions based on their personal experiences and design styles.

AI is trained on different datasets to come up with solutions, but AI is limited by its datasets, especially when there isn’t enough data. This is the main difference between humans and AI. Humans are not limited to specific datasets. They can draw on their experiences and skills to come up with innovative solutions.

AI can still be helpful in some ways. For example, it can improve efficiency. AI can help architects with architectural programming and creating layouts in buildings. It can also make many different processes, such as schematic design and renders, more efficient. However, a downside to AI is that students are supposed to learn skills by exploring different design solutions, ideas and philosophies. Using assistive technologies like AI may hinder this process.

Still, humans are indispensable in the architecture industry. AI will not be able to replace humans 100% due to a lack of ethics and empathy. Decisions made by architects carry responsibilities and liabilities. Sustainability issues, long-term impacts of designs, and ecological footprints all must be considered when creating a project. Although AI has decision-making capabilities, it cannot replace architects’ roles in the ethical decision-making process.

In addition, architecture involves collaborations among different stakeholders. Clients, interior designers, and civil engineers are all involved in the process. Although AI can engage in dialogue, it lacks the ability to engage in dynamic interactions.
