Why Dentists Should Avoid Overtreatment

Dentist8

At most doctor’s offices, you don’t have to worry about overtreatment. Doctors are so busy that they’re overbooking patients and spending little time with them.

That’s not the case with many dentists, though. In fact, in the dental field, overtreatment has become prevalent. Dentists often perform unnecessary treatments for financial gain. However, in this case, more isn’t actually better. It can even lead to license loss.

Getting root canals or enamel replacements does more harm than good to teeth. We only get one set of teeth for life, and unfortunately, a greedy dentist can permanently damage them all in the name of money.

Can you trust your dentist? Many people who have had relatively good, healthy teeth their whole lives change dentists and are told they have bad teeth. They need root canals, teeth extractions, and other major procedures. They are suddenly paying tens of thousands of dollars for restorative dental work. Should they believe their dentist?

The truth is: probably not. If you’re suddenly told you need extensive procedures after a lifetime of good teeth, then something is clearly wrong. Get another opinion.

But many don’t. Not many people like the dentist, so their attitude is to just “get it done.” They move ahead with the procedure, and for what? To be told that they didn’t even need the procedure in the first place.

Why Overtreatment Occurs

Why is overtreatment so prevalent in the dental field? Because there is very little oversight. Approximately 80% of the 200,000 dentists in the United States have their own practice. This is much different for doctors, who often work for hospitals and other large healthcare organizations. They tend to have much stricter oversight.

This means dentists have much more leeway in how they do things. Because of this, they focus on money-making procedures, such as root canals, dental crowns, veneers, and unnecessary restorations.

Money is definitely a focus for dentists. After all, their income is entirely dependent on how many procedures they perform as well as the type of procedures they do. A standard cleaning earns them just $200, so it’s tempting for them to recommend more expensive procedures that aren’t necessary.

This overtreatment, however, can cause lasting harm to patients’ teeth. Many suffer from failed root canals despite spending so much money on them. Many are unable to chew properly. Some suffer from constant pain.
