Ethical Conduct For Pharmacists

Pharmacist6

Prescription drug use is increasing primarily due to the aging population. People are living longer than ever. There are large numbers of elderly people in the United States and on average, a person who takes medications takes four at a time.

This requires a need for skilled pharmacists who treat patients with respect. Many pharmacies are struggling to find competent, ethical pharmacists. Indeed, having a good moral character is not always easy. There may be mean, demanding customers who don’t always understand the various processes and pressures that pharmacists face on a daily basis.

Pharmacists have relationships with patients, colleagues, and the society as a whole. They must take great care to preserve these relationships and treat everyone ethically.

Code of Ethics

Pharmacists work with various medications and therefore must act ethically at all times. Here is the code of ethics they must follow:

  • Pharmacists have a special relationship with patients. A pharmacist must promise to help patients achieve the most benefits from their medications and maintain their trust.
  • Pharmacists must promote the good of every patient. A pharmacist’s focus should be the well-being of patients. They must be dedicated to protecting the dignity of each and every patient.
  • Pharmacists respect the dignity of each patient. Pharmacists should recognize each patient’s self worth by encouraging them to participate in their health. A pharmacist should communicate with patients in easy-to-understand terms.
  • A pharmacist acts with honesty and integrity. A pharmacist has a duty to tell the truth; They must have a good moral conscience. A pharmacist must avoid discrimination and display good professional judgment at all times.
  • A pharmacist maintains professional competence. Health technology is always changing. A pharmacist has a duty to stay abreast of changes in medications and learn more about them as they become available so they can best help their patients.
  • A pharmacist respects colleagues and other health professionals. When necessary, pharmacists should consult with colleagues or other health professionals to best help patients. They should also acknowledge that other health professionals may differ in their beliefs and values when it comes to patient care.
  • A pharmacist serves the needs of the community and society. While the primary obligation is to individual patients, sometimes this obligation may extend to the community and society.
  • A pharmacist seeks fairness when distributing health resources. Pharmacists are fair and equitable when allocating health resources. They must take care to balance the needs of patients and society.
